At Supporters of Children (SOC), our mission is to provide immediate, tailored assistance to young individuals in Colorado facing crises and challenges.

We envision a Colorado where children facing hardship receive the timely and essential support they need to thrive.

How

Supporters of Children strives to provide a bridge between a child's tough situation and a step toward solution. To initiate this assistance, our partner organizations assess and vet the young person’s needs, presenting us with specific funding requests. Whether items such as school fees or supplies, access to transportation, a laptop computer to succeed in their studies, a safe place to sleep, or help paying for medical needs or overdue rent are required, financial support can be essential to getting through a tough time.

When there is nowhere for a child to go for oftentimes small yet necessary essentials that fall outside the parameters of what other non-profits and community support systems can provide, SOC can nimbly and directly deliver the missing piece.

VALUES

Since 1995, the mission of Supporters of Children has been to assist children and young people in Colorado through partnerships with select organizations that help identify kids in need. In line with this work, we are committed to fostering compassionate care in our community, which includes people from all backgrounds, abilities, and perspectives. We are committed to cultivating an organization where all people can do their best work without barriers. Through our outreach and engagement with donors and partners, we strive to be catalysts for community service. We intend for everyone in the Supporters of Children organization and outreach community to feel welcome and valued.

History

Supporters of Children was preceded, in 1990, by an organization called One Day House, a support and daycare center for children affected by HIV/AIDS. This collaboration of professionals and donors renovated a large north Denver home with 100% donated efforts and materials. In 1995, Supporters of Children was created by the original founders of One Day to directly meet the material and service needs of youth in Colorado. SOC continues today with the support of our donors, and through the dedicated efforts of carefully selected partner organizations, who identify children in need. Our board members and other generous contributors fund overhead expenses, so that every dollar of your donation goes directly to the children served.

PRESIDENT
JANET FEDER

Born in Boulder and raised in Denver, I began exploring the world on my own terms in my teens and have since travelled widely across the globe. Volunteering for the benefit of the planet and those less fortunate was integral to my upbringing and has always been part of my life.

As an adult in the 1980’s I advocated for and mentored troubled youth in the juvenile justice system through Denver Partners. I became involved with Supporters of Children in the 1990’s and was elected Board Chair in 2014. I was an advisory board member of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association (1995-2016). I am also an avid cyclist, devoted friend, and adoring family member.

SHARON FEDER

I spent my youth pursuing visual art studies, horses and surviving the 1970’s. The country was a very divided, fearful and angry place – very much like the present. Throughout the confusion and chaos, a commitment to community that I inherited from generations of my family has always been a stabilizer in my life.

In 1990, I became involved in ONEDAY’s Rainbow House for Children Affected by AIDS, creating full room murals throughout the center along with local artist friends; then joined the design team for Supporters of Children; P.S. 1 Denver alternative school; and P/SL hospital’s NICU Parent Support organization.
My commitment to the Natural World, including Family and Community, is the foundation for every moment and for everything I do.

As a business owner, committed to fostering strong, vibrant communities, I believe the foundation of a thriving community begins with our dedication to children. In addition to my professional work, I have a passion for supporting young families as a childbirth and parenting educator and birth doula. Through this work, I've seen firsthand the critical role community support plays, especially when many children today lack extended family to turn to during times of crisis. As both a mother and grandmother, I understand the challenges of raising children and know that sometimes, it’s the simplest measures that can make all the difference in helping a child thrive. I am proud to serve on the board of Supporters of Children, where I can contribute to ensuring that no child is left without the resources and support they need.

ADAMA BAMBA

Adama Bamba, a former recipient of Supporters of Children’s assistance -- turned SOC Board Member -- is a first-generation college student. Adama immigrated to the United States in 2005, with his mother, grandmother, and siblings as refugees, after being displaced due to war in West Africa. Adama grew up as a caretaker for his 4 younger siblings. I remember at a very young age putting together these little pretend classes for my younger siblings, we would call it fake school. As the fake teacher, I would come up with fun little crafts and activities we would do, just to keep them busy and to give our grandmother a break from watching us while my mother was away at work.

A recent graduate of Community College of Denver, he is continuing his studies to complete a bachelor’s degree in art education (so he can then teach “real” school). Adama is currently working for the non-profit arts organization Arts Street (a partner with SOC), teaching students skills in the creative industries at the high school level. Adama wishes to give back to his community and the organizations that have helped him and his family by paying it forward and helping other families and children who are in need, just like he and his siblings were.
